Umrah — A Voluntary Act of Worship
Umrah is a deeply spiritual pilgrimage that can be performed at any time of the year, except during the days of Hajj. Below is the complete journey, step by step — from entering the state of Ihram to completing the rites at the Holy Kaaba.
The 4 Steps of Umrah
Follow the rites in the order they are performed, from entering Ihram at the Miqat to the final Halq or Taqsir.
Ihram
Enter the state of Ihram with a sincere intention for Umrah, recite the Talbiyah, and wear the prescribed white garments.
Tawaf
Circle the Kaaba seven times counter-clockwise, beginning at the Black Stone, then pray two units behind Maqam Ibrahim if feasible.
Sa'i between Safa and Marwah
Walk seven times between the two hills, beginning at Safa and finishing at Marwah.
Halq or Taqsir (Shaving or Trimming)
Men shave the head or trim the hair, and women cut a small portion from the ends, marking the completion of Umrah and release from Ihram.
Sunnah Acts of Umrah
Men uncover their right shoulder during Tawaf.
Men walk briskly in the first three circuits of the Tawaf.
Pray two rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim after the Tawaf.
Men jog (in the marked area) between Safa and Marwa.
